Suffering..... (Wisdom of the Ages, Wayne Dyer)
Its been a long week, and all Ive got to show for it is a crumpled up heating pad and a dirty house. But no matter. Ive decided that Im going to stop feeling sorry for myself and enjoy what opportunities this may bring. Sure Im on the couch a lot, but Ive had lots of time to catch up with reading, and relive some older books that I have read in the past. Wayne Dyer has been a good favorite of mine. I was looking at his book "Wisdom of the Ages" a little while ago, and it gave me some inspiration to stop feeling sorry for myself. On suffering, he wrote about his friend Deepak Chopra. I had no idea they were friends. Cool anyway...
Deepak reminded him of the Ojibway Native American tribe saying. He said "I simply repeat this phrase to myself and almost by magic the mental suffering dissapears."
"Now and then I go about pitying myself and all the while my soul is being blown by great winds across the sky"
Later he goes on to say
As a spectator, you can observe your sufferingm, and from that vantage point, you can actually choose to love it and give yourself to it completely.
This means a great deal to me, because I get so stuck in self pity sometimes. This whole back thing has really got me down, and Ive had time to conjure up all sorts of other problems to think about. And its all bullshit. Im missing out on the lessons to be learned here.
Besides the one where Im not supposed to cough while getting out of a chair. Hah...

Scientology and Psychology
My mother bought me the book Dianetics, which I understand is the methodology behind Scientology. Ive always thought and heard and read that they were insane quacks. I read a little bit of the book today, and I can see why they would think that, however I found some really insightful and interesting concepts in the book.
Recently I read a book called The Holotropic Mind, and in that book is various insights from hypnosis patients of Dr. Stanislov Grov. He participated in the LSD trials, which included conjuring up non-ordinary states of consciousness in order to delve into one's own psyche. Later in his career, he devised a way to obtain these non-ordinary states of consciousness by using breathing techniques. The patients I described earlier were able to relive parts of their lives through hypnosis that they were unable to recal in a waking state. Basically, a psychological problem in present day life, such as not being able to open up, or sexual desires which deviate from the norm, were a few such conditions that were explored. These patients were able to relive the parts of their lives which induced these issues, and all occured in the peri-natal state (in the womb).
Reading about how these patients were cured through methods of exploring the mind, lead me to be interested in what this book Dianetics is saying. I am by no means done with the book, nor did I intend to read the whole thing. It reads like an advertisment, and that really bugs me. I can tell they are trying to make money also. But back to the psychological thing. They introduce a concept called "The Clear", which is a person who is free from psychological "snags". I briefly read about a certain treatment called "repeating". The hook up electrodes to a part of your brain, and you repeat certain phrases. The one I read in particular was "Im caught". The person repeats whatever the phrase it until you feel a change in your brain. (a literal one, this man got a small headache). But aparantly doing this will release you from your "engrams", which I understand to be psychological hangups.
In my studies of psychology, I have begun to understand that interactions with people, and reactions within yourself, are mostly all chemical reactions in the brain. People who like to argue, for example, will seek out situations and react a certain way to stimuli to create an arguement. This is basically caused by the brain craving a certain chemical response to a situation, and it causes you to seek out this experience in order to receieve that chemical. (cortisol, in this example). It is for this very reason Ive always been against treating psychological issues with drugs, because it only masks the problem. I am probably going to read more of the book, Im interested in the proof they have that these methods actually do assist people in becoming more clear headed, as it were.
